The Making of Doctor Fate
For this week's painting, I decided to do a more atmospheric piece, and so I decided to try to make a piece focusing on the more tragic side of Doctor Fate's story.
I first made the pose I wanted and rendered it on a base model in Poser 8. I then roughed out the figure geometry with the round brush in Photoshop. The basic idea was to showcase the more tragic side of Doctor Fate.
I next made a rough overtop of the geometry, and added more detail to the clothing. I decided to mix a bit of the old and the new, on the costume, and incorporated elements of the Young Justice costume design into the classic design. Once that was done, I proceeded to add various rips, tears, breaks, and soaked spots on his costume. I then put everything into the negative and drew out the ankh that often is seen with the character, as well as adding in lightning, rain, puddles, and the base of the Tower of Fate behind him. Instead of the tragic side of the piece I originally intended, I decided to instead go with a more weary and scarred state for the ever-battling hero.
I proceeded to then go over the digital rough with the pen tool, adding more details to Fate's costume and changing some of the musculature and tears. I also refined the rain, ankh, and lightning in negative, and added some basic shading to the costume. I created the title with the pen tool and a gradient overlay layer effect.
I added color flats to the whole piece, and and shaded everything based on the glowing ankh and lightning, all using masks, the round brush, and the gaussian blur filter I also added more minor detailing, such as wet spots on the costume and a less obvious glow to his eyes and mask. I also darkened the piece, making the ankh pop more.
Finally, I added a color atmospheric effect and added texturing to the ground combining several cave photos I took at Woodward Caves.
